This simulated shopping experience is perfect for learning and extending coin currency. Students enjoy shopping with real money from their individually designed and created piggy banks. Students shop at six different stores. They indicate what they wish to purchase by writing about it on corresponding store sheets and indicating the given price (you decide the amounts and make them as easy or as challenging as your students can handle). Students are instructed to count out the exact change and deposit it on their handout. This serves as a performance assessment. Shopping is a culminating activity once students are comfortable with coin identification and corresponding values. Challenge older students to make change from a dollar. Kindergarten students can reinforce base ten with the use of pennies and dimes. Preschool/Pre-K students can sort items to the appropriate stores and shop exclusively with pennies to reinforce one-to-one correspondence.
The six stores include: Toy Store, Bakery, Shoe Store, Grocery Store, Candy Store and Pet Store. Challenge older students to make change from a dollar. Kindergarten students can reinforce base ten with the use of pennies and dimes.
